My Students

We are an inner-city classroom in a large, urban district in Ohio. I teach both math and science. The class is an eclectic mix of students who are bilingual, over-age, accelerated, regular ed. and/or with special needs. Their reading ranges are as diverse as their personalities.

We are moving from fourth grade to fifth together which gives me the advantage of already knowing their strengths and weaknesses before the new school year begins.

This also creates the challenge of making fifth grade feel "different" from fourth grade and not just an extension of last year. I'm looking for ways to raise achievement while engaging their interest.

My Project

My students aren't fans of reading and it makes it very difficult to learn new vocabulary. Unfortunately for them, one of the new trends in standardized testing is to heavily use math terms instead of symbols. This is an additional challenge for my students. They worked so hard to master multiplication, many of them moving up multiple levels, only to be stumped when asked to find the product.

Scholastic magazines will engage my students and immerse them in mathematical language.

The articles are short, but high-interest, and will not only help us build vocabulary, but help us to use it daily. I remember using them in school myself, and how much I looked forward to the next issue. I hope that using them will increase their use and understanding of ma thematics vocabulary.
