My Students

Is it possible to practice reading and math skills in a fun way??? Yes! Scholastic News and Scholastic Math for 4th graders is the key!

My students are 4th grade gifted students in a public school in Louisiana.

They are AVID readers and especially love current events and science and social studies topics. Often times they will go home and do extra research about topics we've covered in class. Their thirst for knowledge is amazing! As part of our curriculum and to continue address their academic learning needs, my students are required to complete independent study projects. These often involve LOTS of research and reading on their own. Then, they share what they know in a creative way, like a PowerPoint, dramatic performance, piece of artwork. This year I'd also like to try Scholastic Math into our studies. The skill practice pages really do look fun, and I love that they are also connect to current events and interesting stories.

My Project

I am requesting is a subscription to Scholastic News Magazine for 4th graders. It's is an invaluable resource that I have used for many years, but Scholastic continues to improve it. Online access to the magazine allows me to view the magazine with the class on our Promethean board. There are introductory videos, vocabulary activities, and comprehension questions linked with the Common Core curriculum. My favorite features are the reading tools! Among others, there is a highlighter and pencil function that allows the students to identify important facts or details, make connections, and summarize as they read. These are such important skills that my students are developing.
