My Project
I teach the best kids in the world They attend school in one of the most multicultural districts in the United States. Although many of my students are deemed at-risk, they are trying very hard to learn, and at the same time, they are learning how to navigate being in school and working together.
Since my students read a variety of levels, it is often difficult to find something that they can all read.
I need something that will appeal to both my readers and non-readers. Magazines are the key! Magazines have short, informative articles and colorful, interesting pictures. My students are ready to develop their reading skills and their media literacy, but they need help to become successful consumers of the news. I am requesting subscriptions to Scholastic News and Science Spin. My students will use the resources from this project to learn how to read "real" magazines. They will learn about text features including captions and graphs. After studying the magazines, students will be able to take their copy home to discuss with their families.
Few of my students have the opportunity to read magazines. They spend most of their time inside their homes watching TV or playing video games. This project will also get them looking at the print news and thinking about what they are reading. This project will help make it possible for my students to put on their special thinking/reading caps and read.
