Scholastic Magazines Are Amazing For Special Education Kids!

Help me give my students Action magazine and Choices Magazine subscriptions so they can read as a group with me (or at home if remote learning!) about real events and issues in every day life at their level.

FULLY FUNDED! Mrs. Larsen's classroom raised $969

My Students

I am a teacher in a junior high special education classroom where students of diverse levels are together in the same English classes. These students also have me for an applied skills class where they get time to work on classwork from all their other classes. Many of my students have learning disabilities and social skills deficiencies. For them, learning can be difficult and frustrating. They struggle so much with reading and with executive functioning.

When my academic and behaviorally challenged special education students come into my classroom, they need exciting and interesting reading materials to keep them on task.

Having some awesome Scholastic magazines to read keeps my students up to date in real world issues in a way that is fun and engaging.

I teach 80 students in a junior high special education resource classroom, and I am always on the lookout for ways to connect these disabled students to the real world in an interesting way.

I teach them that we are "professionals in training" or PITs. We need to be on our best behaviors at school and eventually in the workplace.

My Project

Adding Scholastic magazines to my classroom will enable each individual student to have a visual reading text in front of them. If we are on remote learning, then my students can go easily online, type in an easy school code, and access the digital magazines and all the extras that Scholastic Magazine provides like videos, vocabulary, practice worksheets, and super interesting and current articles. The digital magazine is especially amazing because with one click the student can have every article read to them and have a beautiful visual right in front of them!
