My students need high interest magazines by Scholastic to read weekly!
"Teach in the way a child learns, don't force a child to learn in the way we teach" -Ignacio Estrada
I teach Occupational/Life Skills curriculum at a large, urban high school.
My students have a range of disabilities including learning and intellectual disabilities, visual and hearing impairments, autism, as well as health and other physical impairments. Many of them are also English Language Learners, and almost all of them come from low-income households. My students show greater enthusiasm and achievement when learning is interactive, interesting, and includes technology and high-interest reading materials.
My students will receive a monthly subscription of the Choices and Junior Scholastic magazine. As a class, we will be able to explore the latest health and well-being advice and every issue will help my students effectively navigate real-life issues like cyber bullying, peer pressure, and nutrition, to name just a few. Choices magazine will help my students open up about their own experiences and enable them to ask questions in a safe environment.
Junior Scholastic makes current events relevant to students and builds the skills they need most.
Every issue covers today's most important news stories with on-level nonfiction that builds knowledge in American and world history, geography, economics, and civics. Each informational text is supported by close-reading questions and online skills sheets that prepare students for the types of questions they'll encounter on language arts assessments. Subscriptions also include interactive online features like digital editions, videos, review games, alternate reading levels, and much more to engage students and enhance instruction.
These magazines contain high interest stories that will encourage their love of reading! My students are excited that we will have supplemental reading materials this year.
