My Students
Each year, less and less time is devoted to science and social studies. During our reading time, so much of reading is based on fiction! While I want my students to enjoy reading, I want them to have the opportunity to enjoy all parts of reading, including non-fiction texts.
Wouldn't it be nice to see exotic animals in their habitats, visit ancient ruins, or explore different elements of science?
Scholastic and TIME for Kids magazines can provide all that and more!
I have a very energetic, inquisitive class of 2nd graders.
They love asking questions and learning about the world around them. So many of my students enjoy reading and I would like to be able to provide them the opportunity to read more about real-world events. Currently, I have 11 ESE students, two ESOL students, and one student with a 504 plan.
My Project
So often, science and social studies are pushed out of the way to make more time for reading and math. Right now, I have 30 minutes a day to teach science and 10 minutes a day to teach social studies. What better way to include these subjects than during our reading block? I am hoping to use these subscriptions for literacy centers, so science and social studies can be incorporated into our reading!
I believe that students should have the opportunity to enrich their lives through books; however, many of the books that are available to students are fiction.
Using the Scholastic and TIME for Kids magazines can increase vocabulary, expose students to print features and organizational aids, improve literacy, and prepare students for understanding the world around them. Having these magazines available will connect my students to the outside world. They will be able to build their literacy skills while being exposed to rich informational text.
I want my students to experience ALL of school.
Yes, reading and math are very important, but so are science and social studies. Having these subscriptions will help expose students to subjects that I work so hard to fit in, yet rarely have time to. Thank you so much for your generosity and for helping my students achieve success in all subject areas!
