My students need 35 subscriptions to Scholastic Action Magazine to enhance nonfiction reading skills by accessing texts on a wide range of reading levels.

A typical day in my classroom is full of enthusiasm for reading, even when it is difficult. Many of my students enter seventh grade below reading level. They are committed to growth. We know more time reading naturally fosters that growth. "Today a reader, tomorrow a leader." -Margaret Fuller
My students are the hardest working kids in Columbus, Ohio!
My school is part of a national network of charter schools that serve kids in under served communities. The kids who attend my school develop a strong sense of accountability for their learning. They want a great education, and they know they deserve to go to college one day.
With "Action" magazine, students will engage in supplemental nonfiction reading, sometimes in small groups and sometimes independently, that connects high interest texts with critical skills for reading nonfiction. They will learn to navigate features of nonfiction text, enhance specialized vocabulary and expound upon central ideas with text-based evidence and supporting details.
Donations to this project will give my students ownership of their own subscription to a magazine that they really want to read.
By virtue of becoming more invested readers, they will naturally grow and improve in their comprehension of nonfiction text. Your support will also highlight the importance of a community of learning, as donations from people all over the country touch their lives, bring kids opportunities, and help us all maintain the belief that 'All of us can and will learn."
