Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

My students are bold and beautiful and born and raised in a community that is full of love and pride. Being freshman and sophomores in the school, they pride themselves in being leaders who want to support the younger students grow into bright and strong ladies and gentlemen. They are bright, charismatic, and caring students.

While they are resilient, a lot of them have not been explicitly taught how to balance the rigor of academic life and mindfulness skills and emotional regulation.

The reality is many of them have experienced trauma that affects their ability to concentrate on their coursework. This transition to distance learning has been especially tolling on the students' (and teachers) mind and bodies, but we all want to make it work for the safety of our communities.

My Project

Since the pandemic lock-down has begun last Spring, my students have watched the world from inside their homes and on their computer screens. They've watched a lot of joyful transitions, but also a lot of complicated and confusing national events that have triggered deep emotions. They are looking for the language and the community to be able to talk about the world. They are trying to understand why these racial tensions exist and how they can prevent more violence from occurring in the future.

With this book, a small group of interested students will be able to engage in necessary conversations about anti-racism in a meaningful and honest way.

This book will help them improve their self-awareness and social skills through the questions and analysis of the text. The students currently gather weekly to discuss texts around race, class, and gender. This club is student-led by bright young people, but guided with the help of their sponsor (me!). The book is age-appropriate and will be supplemented with journal writing and mindfulness practices.
