My Students

Think about your favorite book- the one that changed your life or just made you laugh. Now imagine if you had stopped reading that book because of the difficult words you couldn't pronounce. By listening to audio books, my students will expand their vocabulary and experience new literary adventures.

My predominantly low-income African American students attend a school that replaces uncertainty and doubt with a direct path to college.

All students at our school are prepared to attend college through a rigorous series of classes and exceptional extracurricular activities. Our school educates its students both academically and emotionally. Through a program called A Disciplined Life, students learn how to maintain perseverance and strive for excellence both inside and outside the classroom. Students at our school are truly loved by their teachers. That love is expressed through an unrelenting, unabashed demand for excellence. With an emphasis on critical thinking skills and literacy, our school prepares its students for a College for Certain future.

My Project

Acquiring these two iPod nanos would help me set up a Literacy Lab in my English classroom. As a 6th and 7th grade English teacher, I see over 150 students a day. Because many students transfer into my school during 6th and 7th grade, I have a variety of students from a variety of backgrounds. With some 7th graders reading at a fourth grade level, and others reading at a 9th grade level, it can be difficult to differentiate learning. A Literacy Lab will help me challenge ALL my students. Listening to audio books will allow students to read high-interest books above their current reading levels. Inspiring a love of reading in my students is the most important thing I can do as an educator. If my students become life-long readers, they will be life-long learners.

At a school where technology is scarce, the addition of two iPod nanos to my English classroom would spark an immediate interest in reading for my students.

Teaching students to think for themselves and to become leaders in the future begins with a genuine love for reading and a thirst for knowledge. A Literacy Lab in my classroom would be the first step to whetting my students' appetites for a better future.
