Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
If you are looking for dull, you came to the wrong class. My pre-AP English I students are busy preparing for life and careers beyond high school. They are success-driven and highly motivated. They challenge themselves, each other, and their teacher.
My students come from a range of socioeconomic backgrounds and diverse interests, but share the common goal of post-secondary success.
My students understand that reading and critical analysis will lead to the achievement of their goals. We read. We discuss. We analyze. We write. We read some more. Because of the diversity in my classroom, my students appreciate and welcome other perspectives and utilize their differences to elevate their own thinking.
My Project
Reading for pleasure is a priority in my classroom. We want students to read more for a variety of academic and social-emotional benefits. I was fortunate enough to receive a set of books through a previous project that included scary books and graphic novels. These are genres that my students expressed high interest in exploring.
By the end of the day, almost every new book was checked out.
Many have waitlists. Sequels are being requested as first titles make their rounds among my students. I want to keep this momentum going by getting more of the same and completing some of the series that were started.
