This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

My students are determined to attend college and have been in a college prep program for 2-6 years beginning in junior high. Attending college requires money and as the costs continue to increase, I requiring that my students apply for scholarships to pay for their university education.

AVID (Advancement Via Individual Determination) is a college prep program designed to support first generation college students.

As a part of this program, my students must apply for a minimum of three scholarships by the end of January. Scholarship applications may require a variety of documents and last year we discovered that we really needed a scanner to upload documents onto the scholarship application websites. Currently, we do not have a scanner available on campus for my students to use, so I had to take all of the documents home, scan them and email them to students so they could finish their applications.

My Project

My students need a scanner/printer with extra ink for scholarship applications. Having access to a scanner would mean more students could complete their applications and meet the scholarship application deadlines. Last year my students won over $130,000 in scholarships. It would definitely help if they could learn both to scan their documentation and to upload it themselves to the scholarship websites. A scanner in the classroom not only will help students apply for scholarships, but it will also teach them to use technology with a real world application.

Since many of my students are from working class families, they need the financial assistance provided by scholarships.

These scholarships benefit them by supporting their education and help their families by providing much need money for tuition, books, and more. These are capable young men and women who will be the leaders in the future and an investment in them is an investment in future professionals. Providing a scanner to my classroom means all of the AVID students have access to it.
