The readers I teach love books! Whether they are just beginning their reading journey or have experienced a decade of life through characters in books, our students thrive when they choose to read. Nothing excites them like opening a new book and diving in.
Because consistent practice at reading is so important in the life of a reader, it is essential that our students continue to read during the summer break.
As the Title 1 reading teacher in my school, I help support our summer reading program. Our school is the hub of a rural community. While some students have access to books throughout the year, others do not. If we want them to spend two summer months choosing to read, we will have to provide them access and choice to great books. Our summer reading program strives to provide students with books by beloved authors across a variety of genres and interests. Please help us provide a variety of titles for our students to read this summer.
My Project
Research has proven that children who do not read over the summer months can lose up to three months of reading progress. This effect is cumulative and long-term. Sending our students on summer break with a bag of books that excite them will help ensure that they choose to read. We will kick off our summer reading program with a celebration at the school in which students can eat ice cream, get a library card, and participate in One Book One School activities around our school read-aloud. When students come back in August, the summer readers will gather to celebrate their accomplishments. Our school has had the good fortune of having most every book we've sent home returned. But more importantly, we know that when our students come back to school, they will have grown as readers.
