"Summer learning loss during elementary school accounts for two-thirds of the achievement GAP IN READING between low-income children and their middle-income peers by ninth grade."
(Based on a study by Johns Hopkins University)
I am a teacher who will purchase and provide books this summer for my school division's Cafe Feed and Read bus. Monday through Friday throughout the summer, this bus will visit developments that house large numbers of economically disadvantaged families. Children of all ages will enjoy a free hot lunch, a book read aloud as they eat, and a new book of choice to keep.
My Project
Imagine hungry three to 10-year-olds boarding an air-conditioned bus. They are hungry for food, of course. In fact, they often are hungry for words...from conversations...a book read aloud and the questions and discussion it prompts...a special, self-selected book all their own to take home and treasure.
The bus buzzes with excitement as hungry children listen to the book of the day and savor the selection of books from which they may choose.
Carefully they make a just-right choice to take with them. Some older children may feign disinterest, but they are swept up in the enthusiasm of others and leave with their own treasure.
