Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

International High School - KCC is a school to help students designated as English Language Learners prepare for a successful life academically, physically, professionally, and emotionally. As our students were all raised in cultures with different viewpoints and beliefs, it has been difficult to combat ignorance on important health topics like smoking and AIDS. The problem is further compounded by the fact that we don't currently have a health teacher on staff (being a first year school, we won't have one for another three years) who can design a curriculum to reach these students during critical years. It is a fact that most people who start smoking will pick up the habit before the age of 18, and that would make the health teacher's curriculum too late for many of our students. One of the reasons combating ignorance has been so difficult is because the students can't see the damage that is caused. Myths and rumors have spread through different cultures regarding ailments and diseases that have made my guidance curriculum seem incorrect. One student went so far as to say that everyone knows when a person has AIDS, they'll live longer if they have sex with a lot of people who are not infected. The same mentality exists about smoking. I have requested a set of "healthy lungs" and a set of "smokers lungs" to provide a visual aid to my students during my guidance curriculum classes. Hopefully, these will send a message to them early, so that they won't start smoking instead of receiving a message as seniors trying to convince them to quit smoking.
