My Students
We're learning, and it's not quiet. This year we're studying chemistry and physics in middle school. We are engaged in active learning, finding many ways to access content, through laboratory activities, projects and group work. We cannot wait to learn in new ways, because we get bored easily.
My students attend a school that was labeled as a turn-around-school six years ago.
They come from an urban environment without a lot of resources, but they value learning-especially when it's fun. Each year since our turn-around status, we have made incredible gains in math and reading. Now it's time for our science learning to catch up. By the end of the year I want my students to be able to design controlled experiments, argue about science content and pass the state test to show that they really can compete with their peers outside the city. Most importantly though, I want my students to know how to be productive contributing citizens.
My Project
One way to ensure that my students become productive citizens is by letting them access content in multiple ways. Students learn in many different ways, and these talking buttons will offer another option of practicing and repeating content. I plan to have students record themselves sharing key points to lessons and definitions for important vocabulary words. Then they will press the buttons and hear the important learning and term highlighted. These buttons will add a new opportunity for fun-focused learning into my classroom. Students will be thrilled to record and hear their own voices. They will enjoy having cues that allow them to play their buttons.
Additionally students need to learn that there are many ways to communicate. Throughout their lives they will interact with others who are not able to communicate with their voices. Exposure to these alternate communication devices will open students minds to new ways to communicate.
These buttons will help to engage students, support their learning and extend their view of what it means to communicate.
They will spice up the learning in my class as a new and unique pieces of technology. They will allow students to demonstrate and practice learning in a new way. They will expand their view of communication styles. Thank you for improving my students learning and ensuring that they become productive, contributing citizens in our community.
