My students come from low socioeconomic homes. Many of their parents are forced to work-out-of state to provide for their families while the children are raised solely by one or two elderly grandparents.
While they are with me I focus on their strengths and interests.
I ensure I am creating a warm and loving environment by greeting them with a hug and complimenting them on their shoes, clothing and anything they feel proud of. I know they are faced with many hardships at home with much separation anxiety never knowing when they will see their parents next. But in my classroom is a loving warm environment where they can relax and rely on me to always be there, to believe in them, cheering them on, in their learning endeavors.
My Project
These materials will allow my students to learn mathematical concepts in a hands-on matter. Most of my students are English language learners, and it is imperative for them to have a method of expressing and understanding mathematical concepts. For instance, all students will learn number recognition while fishing for magnetic numbers. Students will not only learn more mathematics but will also be driven to learn unlike with conventional worksheets.
Young children learn best when they are allowed to construct their own knowledge independently.
Students will learn counting and number identification through math games such as unlocking the locks using different keys. Students love solving mysteries and finding the right key is an example which they can relate to while applying mathematical thinking. Additionally, the keys will allow the students to self-correct themselves when necessary.
The hands-on math trays will allow my students to use the various counters in our classroom in different ways. These trays provide opportunities for students to sort, graph and pattern counters in a hands-on manner.
