My school has been serving K-6 students, both military dependents and local residents, since 1956 as part of the Hawaii State Department of Education. My classroom integrates a remarkably diverse population that includes Filipinos, Caucasians, African-Americans, Samoans, and Asian-Americans.
I am an elementary school special education teacher, teaching students where small groups, close proximity, and acceptance is very important.
My students range in abilities and grade-levels, which makes my classroom a fun and unique environment to be a part of.
The materials requested would make a difference in the lives of my students by allowing them to quickly capture moments of emotions using body language and facial expressions in color, instantly!
My classroom services students who have severe autism, learning disabilities, and intellectual disabilities which often make it difficult and frustrating for them to be able to understand their own and others' emotions and body language or facial expressions.
A Fuji instant camera, film, and a carrying case will be used for many different projects in the classroom that center around emotions, daily living skills, communication, and social/emotional development. For example, I would really like to start by having students create a basic book about basic emotions using the camera to capture the students showing a mad, sad, scared, tired, happy, and O.K. facial expression. I would have students write a message with each film provided. Then we would use this like a social story for daily practice. Students can look at each others' books and see if they can find anything similar or different about their expressions. Then, we would use the camera and instant film to branch off from basic emotions to more gross motor emotions using body language.
