This year our students are engaging in a new model for science. I teach a hands-on approach to science, however, students see me once a week. Because of this, our students often must carry over their experiments for several weeks.
Many of my students are from economically disadvantaged homes and a large percentage are from an English as a Second Language family.
Many of my children are learning English at school. Because of this, my students have limited access to technology and have language acquisition difficulties. Additionally, these students are expected to master science concepts that are tested at the state level. Historically, our students have not performed very well on this test as they need more hands-on experience and reinforcement of concepts through pictures and visuals.
With this wonderful digital camera, there are many uses that will enrich and enhance my science program. I will be able to record stages of various experiments for the students to reference. Students will be able to capture their scientific observations in a digital format to increase their understanding. Having the photos in a digital format will allow students to share the information with each other, as well as students across our state who are studying the same concepts. Also, being able to access and use technology will give my students a more level playing field as their peers in more affluent areas. Because a majority of my students come from homes with limited discretionary income, they do not have the same access to technology. Being able to use the technology at school is imperative for our students to become twenty-first century learners.
Through generous donations like yours, this camera will indeed impact my students in significant ways.
First, they will be able to use the tools scientists use, evaluate their observations, and track experiments. They will not only act like scientists, they will BE scientists. Having hands-on availability to materials is an absolute must. Your help will allow my students an opportunity they would otherwise not have.
