Help me give my students their own reusable bottles to celebrate the culmination of our Distance Learning unit on the effects of plastic pollution!
FULLY FUNDED! Mrs. W's classroom raised $492

My Students
Our district is very low-income and diverse. When the prospect of "Distance Learning" became a reality, many of our teachers and staff knew there were families that would have limited access, or no access, to technology at home. Thankfully, our district took action to survey the families with teacher assistance. We were able to find out how many families had a device that their children could use at home, and whether they had home Internet or WiFi to connect those devices.
Families who needed access to a device, were able to borrow a student iPad from the school.
Families who needed access to WiFi were provided with a phone "hotspot" device for Internet connection. Now, almost all of our students are "connected" and able to access the lessons and resources we provide on "Google Classroom." As a sixth grade teaching team, we are working hard to provide lessons in math, reading, writing, science, social studies, P.E., art, and socio-emotional-learning. Students can also access district-provided learning programs, like "LEXIA," "Zearn" and "BrainPop!" It's great knowing that now, all our students have equal opportunities to access these "assignments" and continue practicing their skills at home!
My Project
During "Distance Learning" with "Google Classroom," all the sixth grade classes at our school have been participating in an environmental unit about the effects of plastic pollution in the oceans. They read many articles, performed their own independent research, wrote persuasive essays, and created their own Google Slides presentations. Students have learned that it is much better to use reusable food containers and bottles rather than disposable ones, even if the disposables are recyclable, because many recyclables inadvertently end up in the oceans.
The water bottles we are requesting will give all our sixth grade students their own reusable containers to use at home or on-the-go, in celebration of all they have learned about the environment and all the work they have done throughout this unprecedented "Shelter In Place" situation.
We chose green water bottles for their symbolism of "going green." With their own high-quality, BPA-free bottles, students will be able to reduce their own daily use of plastic in a very significant way. We are also requesting some Cricut label-making supplies, so we can label the bottles with a special message for students. You see, this is also the end of the school year and they are missing out on their promotion ceremony to send them off to middle school. We would like to label the bottles with "Franklin School - Class of 2020 - Go Green!" In this way, the water bottles will serve as both a "culminating activity" for the environmental unit, while also providing each student with a "souvenir" of their sixth grade year that will last them for years to come. We feel this is much more significant than a bag of candy or "party favors," and connects directly to the learning from this school-year.
