My Students

What makes my students special? Given this prompt, it's hard to narrow down to just two paragraphs! My 23 fifth graders are each individually unique in their interests, strengths, and weaknesses. However different, they do share some amazing qualities. My students are kind-hearted, as they are always looking out for one another. They are determined, as they refuse to take failing or less than perfect as an option.

Most importantly, they are constantly willing to learn!

I knew these students were different when I was approached by a child during the second week of school. She was so excited because she had worked on a presentation at home to help the class study for an upcoming science test and wanted to share it with the class. How ambitious is that? This type of above and beyond attitude is what makes me dread the day I have to send them off to middle school!

My Project

This project may seem a little "catch all", but it is all centered around creating a classroom climate that is functional and efficient for learning! Last year, my students worked hard to learn how to code, and were rewarded with DonorsChoose.org gift cards! We did a writing assignment at the end of the year, and the top contenders of how to spend the money were a cool rug for the library, more dice so we don't have to share while playing games, and one (totally future teacher) student suggested more storage around the room that wasn't "ugly plastic drawers". With that, this project was born! The students will use the space rug to address an SOL that always seems pesky- the planets! A visual representation is the best way for them to remember the order and size of the planets, and being able to sit on the rug is a nice review. The pegboard is going to be a great resource for students to find what they need in an organized fashion when they miss a day, need extra help, or need to borrow supplies. Having everything in reach promotes independence, which is a huge part of 5th grade! As for dice, we use these daily for games, math activities, and projects. You can never have enough!
