My Students

Every time you open a newspaper or turn on the television, stories about saving the environment seem to dominate. I am the librarian at an inner city, K-6 Expeditionary Learning (EL) school. EL is a method of instruction that emphasizes high achievement through active learning.

Being an EL school, our students spend a great amount of time planning and carrying out their expeditions.

Expeditions are in-depth studies that address a topic or theme. In the spring, the expeditions are always related to a science subject. This year, many of our grades related their expeditions to the environment. For example, our sixth graders are doing an expedition on "Where the Wild Things Are" and exploring different biomes and how the environment is affecting these biomes. We have even begun a recycling club this year and it has been very successful! The students and teachers are constantly asking for resources to help them, but unfortunately, the library is really lacking in books about the environment and the effects that people have on it.

My Project

Next year, per the student's requests, we are starting an Environmental Club at our school. Our students are constantly asking how they can help the environment and what they can do. My library budget is extremely limited, and my budget is only $1,000 per year. This only buys a handful of books and I never seem to have enough money to buy the extras. Books about the environment would be wonderful. Not only would the teachers use them in their daily lesson plans, but my students would also love to check them out of the library.

Reading is essential to students learning, and matching our students up to books that they want to read is key.

Preserving our environment is so important and it is something that our whole school is beginning to realize as a necessity. The resources I am asking for will directly impact our students because they will be able to read and discover for themselves exactly what they can do to make a difference. These books will remain in the library and be used by students for years to come.
