I am a teacher in a low-income district with over half of our high school students eligible for the free and reduced-price lunch programs. I find that my students are faced with many challenges. While some are routed to the high school from a very rural setting, sometimes sitting on a bus for over an hour, others live in poverty with little access to resources or support. Despite these challenges, they are motivated, creative, insightful, and determined to reach their full potential.
Our students are committed to connecting, creating, and changing the world- words central to our school's mission statement.
Our public "small" high school in Oregon supports the dream that ALL students graduate ready to pursue a post-secondary education and become life-long learners. Our small school model is driven by students establishing a positive, engaging, and inclusive community where they can explore their interests in interdisciplinary classes that encourage relevant and hands-on learning opportunities.
My Project
Imagine a classroom full of high school freshman practicing their CPR compressions, in unison, as "Staying Alive" plays in the background! However, to fully certify my students in AHA First Aid and CPR techniques, they need access to high-quality child and infant manikins.
My students look forward to using their new skills as they babysit their siblings, wrap sprained ankles on a hike, or pack a wound during a backpacking trip.
They have looked forward to this unit all year, and cannot wait to dive into our body systems to learn how the cardiovascular and respiratory systems are interconnected. They are motivated by curiosity and the desire to do GOOD in the world. My students embody our mission statement at our school: Connect :: Create :: Change.
