This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
The chorus of sniffles in my room is deafening, and we ran out of tissues weeks ago!
My 7th and 8th grade students are an energetic bunch of teens who love to socialize and have fun.
Our middle school is located in a gritty, working-class neighborhood in Northern California. More than half of our 640 students qualify for a free or reduced price lunch. So-called minorities (Latino, Asian, African-American, and Pacific Islander) make up more than 90% of our student population. Although these teens possess many amazing gifts, they aren't wealthy enough to provide the supplies our struggling district lacks.
My Project
The tissues our district provides are more like sandpaper than actual tissues, and we always run out of them early in the year. With 135 students coming through the door every day, it's crucial to have a stock of tissues and hand sanitizer to try and prevent the spread of viruses. These students need to be in school, not at home nursing a cold. And we have a constant need for pencils.
The rolling cart will help support our entire school by letting us sell snack items at sporting events to raise funds for yearly planners and other student-focused items. Parents can't afford to purchase these planners, and we don't have the money for them in our budget. Students need planners in order to be organized and ready for high school and college. The high mobility of the utility cart allows us to keep items for sale in a secure location and just wheel it out after school for games. It would eliminate the need to make multiple trips and set up each time we try to fundraise.
Having high quality tissues within reach is important and indirectly communicates to students that they are valued.
When a student asks me for a pencil, I want to give him/her a pencil with no recriminations, payment, or apology necessary. The utility cart will help us raise much needed funds to purchase student organizers for next year. Please support our school!
