Monarch butterflies were recently added to the endangered species list due to lost habitat and a decline in milkweed plants. This problem is an excellent one to bring to young minds in first grade.
What can we do to help?
Students will become authentic problem solvers and decide what actions they can make to impact and create change. Science, social studies, writing, and art standards will be integrated into this project based learning. Students will study the life cycle of the monarch butterfly and milkweed plant in the process of learning about the problem. In addition to reading books, students will also have the opportunity to raise butterflies in the spring and grow milkweed and other pollinator plants to plant around our school and at their homes. Grow lamps will ensure that our seedlings will grow in our classroom which has very little natural light.
These engaging books, butterfly nursery, manipulatives, and grow lamps will provide students with the means to become real world problem solvers and environmental stewards for years to come.
