My Project

I am requesting a Lomi Composter to help with food scrap waste in our classroom. My classroom bakes and/or cooks multiple times each month. Students get to choose what treat to bake for their birthdays to share with the class. Every month we invite families in for our Family First Friday Feast and students cook for and serve their families. We are learning great life skills embedded with math, science and reading of directions/recipes. However, we end up with empty eggshells, potato and carrot peels, onion skins and other biodegradable materials that unfortunately go into the trash because of our very long winter, cold and snow. All year, I've wished for an in-class Lomi Compost machine to reduce food waste and also create rich soil to grow new plants in our classroom or add to our outside school garden. Having the Lomi would teach students the value of composting their food waste and how easily we can reduce our impact on our landfill, because there is really no "gone away" for our garbage and our landfill will reach capacity soon. We will also have new rich soil to plant in, knowing exactly WHAT is in our soil!
