My Students
Children at our school are part of a very special community. Our students come from diverse socioeconomic backgrounds. Some families are self-sufficient, while others benefit from free or reduced-price lunch and our backpack food program.
We are dedicated to providing a supportive environment where all children have the opportunity to feel valued and successful.
The school is smaller than others in our area, so it is pretty easy to get to know everyone and feel as though you are part of a family.
Teachers pride themselves on fostering positive relationships with their students. The entire staff looks for everyday examples of students making good choices and reward positive behavior. Students are encouraged to be kind to each other and to understand that kindness begins within each one of them.
Visitors to our school can immediately feel the “we’re all in this together” spirit. We are a group of 600 friends, trying to make our world a better place.
My Project
Each April, my students begin rehearsing a play to be performed for their parents at the conclusion of the school year in May. The play is based on the books, "The Day the Crayons Quit," and "The Day the Crayons Came Home," both authored by Drew Daywalt. The books are about different colored crayons and their challenges with being that particular color. Poor black crayon is only used to outline things and sobs that "no one wants a black beach ball." Each student portrays a different crayon from the book.
Due to COVID-19, the students will be unable to present the play this year.
Through this project, every student will receive both of these books. We will read them together as a class virtually. Students will record their "parts" and then, I will compile the recordings into one virtual play. My hope is that this will give students a positive memory of the end of 1st grade.
