This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My school's mascot is Buzzy the Bee and our motto is "busy as a bee at the ELC." Our school rules are "Be Kind, Be Safe, and Be a Worker" and for spirit day in a twist that shocked no one we have chosen a theme of bees. We love bees here at the ELC and it's time for us to take action and give back to these hard-working and essential creatures.
I have created a huge project for Spirit Day that will reinforce our students' knowledge of the importance of bees and their role in our environment, as well as teach them what they can do today to support bee conservation.
In this project, I am requesting several different books about bees and pollinators for teachers to read in preparation for Spirit Day. I am asking for bubble guns, inflatable flowers, and bubble solutions to do a large-scale pollination activity with students where they will play the part of bees spreading pollen from flower to flower. Once students successfully pollinate all the flowers with this game they will be given seed packets with native pollinator-friendly plants. We will show them how to scatter the seeds around the city of Chelsea near trees on the sidewalk, or in yards and planters, etc. They will also help us to plant wildflowers all around the school to attract more bees to our school garden. Students will help to install bee hotels in the garden area while they learn about solitary bees. Students will also be given bee bracelets, temporary bee tattoos, or headbands to remind them to share what they have learned with their families when they get home. If we can pull off this project the city of Chelsea will see a wildflower explosion this summer, making thousands of happy pollinators!
