Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
I teach an extremely eager and bright collection of immigrant high school students, most of whom are from low-income households. All of them are learning English, and all have come to America to pursue the American dream of freedom, a great education and unfettered opportunity.
To get a high school diploma, my students are expected to complete the same high school requirements as native English speakers, and in the same amount of time.
To teach English, every teacher in my school is a content teacher and an English teacher. Every class is a content-rich, collaborative, and project-based environment. I teach English in the context of science, specifically biology. Our small school lacks a large guidance department, so teachers are also teachers of advisory classes and are responsible for preparing students for college and careers.
My Project
I am requesting a USB flash drive for each student on my team so they may save an electronic record of their work on every project. As they progress towards junior and senior year, opportunities for internships, summer programs, and pre-college courses constantly arise. To help them respond quickly to deadlines and so students are not always reinventing the wheel, a USB drive would allow them to save a record of their classwork, applications, as well as an updated resume. When deadlines approach for projects, we will save lots of time that would have been spent searching for old essays, and instead spend our time reviewing what we've accomplished and polishing our credentials for the next great opportunity.
Organization sounds boring, but it is an essential life-skill.
If you can't find your bills, you certainly won't remember to pay them. Likewise, in the tornado of paperwork that students generate in 4 years of high school and the college application process, it's easy to lose track. A simple USB drive, beyond the means of many of my students, would give them a leg up as they strive to succeed in their new home and new language.
More than three‑quarters of students from low‑income households
