it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
Imagine moving to a new country and not knowing the language. Imagine having to write essays, create resumes, and become college-ready in a language that is not your native tongue. This is what my students face and do it gracefully. They are champs!
My high school students are all recent immigrants to the United States.
As a group, although they come from dozens of countries and speak over a dozen languages, they all have a common mission: to learn English while completing the same high school requirements as native English speakers. To overcome this daunting task, we use a collaborative, project-based, interdisciplinary, and content-rich environment in all classes. All teachers are both content and English teachers. In my classes, I use a hands-on activities approach to encourage the use of English in all of its forms - reading, writing, listening, and speaking. Even a student with no English carries education and experiences with them. My projects are designed so students can express who they are and practice their new language with peers. In this system, students who come to me with no English are able to get full scholarships to universities and colleges here in America to pursue their own American Dream.
My Project
I am working with my school to help create a college and career readiness plan including working with students to write their resumes and a portfolio of their work. By providing these USB flash drives, I will be able to help students work on drafts and keep a copy of their work which often they are not able to do on their own without my help. This will assist them to find success and archive their progress of academic and English language acquisition growth.
These USB flash drives will enable my students to save their work and be able to more fully edit their work, craft their resumes, and learn the organizational skills to find success.
Students are unable to buy these for themselves so to be able to provide them will be a huge help to my work and class.
