Save Our Books!

My students need chair pockets to store paperback literature anthology books and reading/writing workshop books.

My Students

I WANT TO SAVE OUR BOOKS! I just received a BRAND NEW reading curriculum for my first graders but unfortunately the books are PAPERBACK and not hard cover like most reading series. My fear is that the books will get ruined inside of the desks and I won't be able to reuse them in years to come.

My students have been first graders for four months so far.

Majority of my students have a challenging and difficult home life. The school is a Title I school that has over 90% of the population on free or reduced lunches. The school is a public school in an urban community. Recently the school district suffered a deficit and all of it's schools suffered a financial loss including loss of vital staff members and lack of school supplies. Most of the students only come to school supplied with pencils, crayons and a few composition books that will need to be replenished by mid-year. Through the school district, I only receive a $100 stipend to buy supplies annually which isn't nearly enough for a classroom of 30+ children. I end up spending $700-$800 out-of-pocket a year on BASIC supplies which is a lot on a teacher's salary.

My Project

I am trying to eliminate disasters that destroy books like crayon, marker and pencil markings, pulled apart pages, bent or ripped covers, etc. My vision is to see each student in my class with a chair pocket attached to the back of their seat. The chair pockets would aid in holding all four paperbacks assigned to each of my students. I could also divide the pockets into two sections (the reading books vs. the writing books) and label them accordingly. This would eliminate the use of putting the books into the desks or using milk crates to store the books (which we are currently doing).

The chair pockets help store the books in an easily accessible way and they help the students stay organized.

They also help with smooth transitions and minimize having to "pass out materials." This will decrease losing instructional time as well. Attaching them to the back of the students' seats is a space saving technique and the desks can be utilized for other materials like manipulatives. With the chair pockets being plastic, they can be wiped off and reused for years to come.
