I teach in fifth grade in Queens, NY. My students are a diverse group of learners. Each student comes to my class with their own unique academic needs. This year fifth graders are learning in all different forms. Some students are working virtually, while others are in school five days a week.
Students this year have faced unprecedented challenges.
No matter their learning situation each and every one of my students perseveres and remains motivated to conquer any challenge.
My Project
At the start of this school year all fifth graders read Save Me a Seat together virtually. Save Me a Seat is about two very different boys entering the fifth grade. The boys soon realize that although they come to school with their own unique perspective, they are not so different after all. This story helped to connect my fifth graders and helped us learn that even though we all have our own point of view, we still have a lot in common. As the year went on we constantly referenced back to the main characters whenever we felt alone. The story helped us to remember that even though we are all different and are physically far apart, we have more in common than we realize.
Now as we are ending our fifth grade year I would like to give all fifth graders their own physical copy of Save Me a Seat.
I want my student to carry this book and the message it brings with them as they begin their new life in middle school. I want them to have their own copy to reread whenever they are feeling alone and need a reminder that even though every individual comes with their own unique perspective, we also have a lot in common!
