it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
Help us continue our successful Great Leaps Summer Reading intervention to help Special Education students and English Language Learners into the new school year!
Our public school community consists of 94% economically disadvantaged students, 89% of whom are Hispanic, and 47% designated as English Language Learners.
This summer 3 teachers volunteered to provide a simple, yet elegant remote reading program: 7 weeks of daily 15 minute sessions that had an amazing impact on 10 students' reading abilities. These students (who consisted of English Language Learners and students with special needs), grew an average of 0.7 of a grade level in that short time! Reading rates improved by an average of 60%! One student gained 1.1 years growth with a 54% growth in rate! In exit interviews, many mentioned gaining confidence in their reading ability!
Five days a week, in 15-minute sessions, teachers provide immediate feedback in low-stress 1-minute reading probes where students must retrieve letter/sound/word pattern information to read phonetically-categorized words, sight word phrases, and stories. This retrieval work targets unfamiliar word patterns and sight word phrases giving them repeated attempts to master them, work that will move these unfamiliar words/word parts into long-term memory.
My Project
We would like to continue this fantastic growth by continuing this program that is working in both remote and in-person! Teachers and paraprofessionals at our school will work this program (5 days a week for 15-minute sessions) to bring these students at-risk for reading failure to grade level!

We want to spend the precious time we get with students on interventions that move them quickly and work both remotely and in-person. Great Leaps Digital does that! We NEED wins for our children. School budgets have been slashed we must ask for donations from you for this powerful intervention for our students. The daily reading probes are designed to get kids to automatically retrieve sight words, phonics, and read stories in low-stakes teacher-supervised sessions.
