My students need science supplies including a microscope and prepared slides, an earth science exploration center, and a set of science tools activity materials.
A day in our classroom involves exploration of as much as we can of this world. Our ongoing goal is to expose the students to as much science as possible in the classroom and ignite their curiosity for this world. “Education is not the filling of a pail, but the lighting of a fire.” W.B.Yeats
My students are students who have special needs.
It is easy to overlook students with special gifts and think they do not need to be taught about earth or life science or small things seen only through a microscope. But my students are curious. They are always exploring and digging and expressing curiosity for small things and big things alike. Our goal is to channel that curiosity into more science driven learning and activities. My school is an urban neighborhood elementary school housing students from K-2.
My Project
My students need science supplies including a microscope and prepared slides, an earth science exploration center, and a set of science tools activity materials. These resources will enable my students to look at their world through different eyes and see things they may not otherwise see. The students will be able to explore part of their world and have their curiosity fired and their imaginations stoked. They will have reusable tools at their disposal so that time and time again they can experiment in the safety of the classroom. They will be able to get their hands dirty building a volcano or mixing together different materials in a giant test tube. In short, the students will have a variety of opportunities to learn about this world in the hopes that their energy will be expended in constructive ways and school will not be such a chore for them each day. These materials will help my students stay interested in school and develop deep passion for science related learning.
I am provided no curriculum in my classroom, and I have a very small yearly budget, which does not go very far.
This means, that we have to beg, borrow, or buy for ourselves most of our materials, curriculum, supplies, and anything else we need. The materials in this grant will go a long way towards the ongoing construction of our hands-on science curriculum which is a long-term project we are currently undertaking.
