I teach preschoolers in a school district in Ohio. Half of my students are 3-5 years old with special needs and the other half are considered typically developing role models. Some of my students have speech and language disabilities, autism, social emotional disabilities, Down Syndrome, fine and gross motor weaknesses, learning disabilities and many other special needs. About half of the students come from low income households. At their young age they are excited about learning and eager to participate in the hands-on experiences I provide for them.
My Project
Many of the students in my classroom have sensory integration disorders and need special materials to meet their sensory needs so that they can focus better. The children needs lights for visual stimulation, toys that can be squeezed stretched and manipulated and a comfortable place to sit as they calm down. These toys that activate and calm their senses will help them to focus on essential learning activities in the classroom. It is essential to have materials like this on order to meet the sensory needs of the children. When we can meet their sensory needs they are able to calm down and focus in order to learn the essential skills for classroom success. These materials will be used with children that have a variety of special needs, but many of the children who will benefit most have autism spectrum disorders.
