Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
Many of my students will be the first in their families to attend college. They are not familiar with the process of applying to college. On top of this, they are not familiar with the SAT. By exposing them to the SAT readers, they will be preparing for the SAT, in hopes of scoring higher.
My kids are hopeful & caring.
They look forward to attending college, although they are not familiar with the procedure -1st kids in college. If not guided correctly, fewer students will apply to colleges. On the state test exam, many are proficient in English. When motivated, they rise to the rigor of the curriculum. They respect the teacher and themselves. In September, I brought my students to the College Center: they were empowered enough to reprimand other students who were not listening to the college counselor by reminding them to "Be quiet, the counselor is speaking". I was surprised & happy to see this happen. Normally an adult reprimands students. My students deserve the best. They enjoy reading during SSR. In the past, I offered acceptance of late work, if students texted me & brought it in within the week: very few students did so. BUT, this class of 2010-2011, do so & kept their promises to hand it in at the later date. Many choose to stay afterschool for extra help
My Project
The "Marino Mission", written by Dr. Karen Chapman, B.S Biology, PhD. Molecular Biology engages the teenage readers and includes 1000 SAT words that will prepare students for the SAT. Our school has a 20 minute daily sustained silent reading. As a class, we can read together the beginning of the book leading to independent reading. Chapters will be assigned, so most students will be able to discuss, reflect and relate what is happening in the book with each other. Students can go faster. Encourage students to incorporate 4-5 words/week in their daily conversations to increase SAT vocabulary retention. Analysis of Biological occurrences in the book will be noted and related to curriculum standards. In addition to learning 1000 SAT words, students will be part of a literacy circle of classmates & be able to discuss literature in relations to the plot, as well as biologically in their lives and raise awareness of a different genre of literature. All 200 students can borrow book.
Simple fact: My students do not live in an environment where Academic English is the main language.
Many of my students are 1st generation english only speakers. Their parents speak a different language, or have not been exposed to academic english. To help the process of learning academic english, the "Marino Mission" will assist my students in stepping forward in academic english & give them a comparable chance to succeed in the SAT compared to a student raised in the ideal situation.
