Help me give my students the opportunity to do a few novel studies this school year. Students will read and annotate their books and take them home at the end of the novel study.

My Project
I teach third grade in Sparks, Nevada and I have a class full of innovators! My students have a curiosity for learning and finding out how to solve problems through projects. Although we have more curriculum than is humanly possible to get through, I value the hands-on approach to the standards in third grade.
A couple of years ago, I came across a book called “The Boy Who Harnessed the Wind” by William Kamkwamba and fell in love with it.
The message of perseverance, dedication, and determination throughout the book is something I want my students to learn alongside the third grade standards. I would like my students to have their own copy of the book while I read aloud this year.
I would like to go one step further and give the students the opportunity to build their own windmills that they can keep. With the basic knowledge of motors and circuits, students can make a windmill out of a water bottle! I feel that this is a project that will be remembered forever.
Students have been reading non-fiction out of basal readers but what better way to promote annotating and text dependent answers than with each student having their own chapter book to read along with the teacher?
Students will draw on information from multiple points or digital sources, demonstrating the ability to locate an answer to a question quickly (RI.5.7).
As students are immersed in engineering design, they will be meeting the objectives of their science standards such as 3-5-ETS1-2: generate and compare multiple possible solutions to a problem based on how well each is likely to meet the criteria and constraints to the problem.
