Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

Kindergarten is becoming more and more academically rigorous every year. While it's great to have high expectations for these 5 year olds, they still need their time to be kids and to use their senses to explore and learn. A sand center is a great way to accomplish this!

My students are 5-6 year-old children who live in a low socio-economic community.

The majority of students are English language learners. They are great kids, but many times have to deal with difficult situations in their lives. Though our school may not be located in a great area, we work hard to give our students an inviting place to learn, a chance to experience new and memorable things, and create an opportunity for a better life.

My Project

I am requesting play sand and sand/water manipulatives, such as sifters, rollers, pipes, and shells with letters and numbers to use during our play time outside. The students will be able to use these materials to explore and discover different properties of sand. It will give students a chance to be hands-on and active. Using sand or water sensory centers helps to develop a child's cognitive skills because they are investigating, observing, problem solving, and looking at cause and effect relationships. It also helps to stimulate imagination and curiosity. In addition, these sensory materials promote both physical and fine motor skills because they are hands-on activities. The letter and number shells also helps to reinforce some of the literacy and math skills they learn in class.

This sand center will be a great asset for all students, but especially for kinesthetic learners that learn through active physical engagement.

Students will be developing, both cognitively and physically, and learning without even knowing it. And of course, sand play is a fun time for students to relax after a hard day's work.
