My Students

A scientifically literate public is crucial if we are to overcome the challenges we face in the future. Science is not a collection of facts, but a process. Students learn science best by conducting scientific investigations. Help me provide my students with experiences that will help them.

My students attend a small rural district in eastern Washington State.

Some live in town but most come from the farms and surrounding areas. The school serves families from a range of economic backgrounds. Some come from comparatively wealthy families, while many others live in poverty that is hard to imagine. Whatever their background their lives are deeply linked to the land. Their families make their living either directly or indirectly through farming. In a time when people worry about lack of physical activity for children, my student spend their spare time hunting, fishing, and riding horses. Many work long hours planting and harvesting the crops. As the science teacher for the district it is my goal to use science to broaden my students’ understanding of the world and their place in it.

My Project

One of my favorite things to do with students is water quality testing. It requires the application of concepts in ecology, chemistry, and environmental science. It provides students with an authentic opportunity to collect data, apply scientific concepts, and ask scientific questions. By funding our project you will help us to resupply the chemicals we need to test local rivers and streams for dissolved oxygen, and obtain the materials needed to monitor water transparency and acidity levels. The data collected can be used to assess the quality and health of the local waterways, and to make decisions about local land use.

In this time of budget deficits, I find myself making increasingly difficult choices about which materials to buy.

Inevitably my students are being shortchanged. With your help we can continue to provide students with experiences that make science interesting and exciting. Thank you for supporting science in our schools.
