My Students
As much as we all love Dr. Seuss stories, we know that in order to do well in school, students need to be able to read books which are much more challenging. For the students I work with, learning to do so can be quite difficult - more so than trying to convince someone to eat green eggs and ham.
I am a special education teacher working in an urban school in California.
The students I work with have been identified as having various disabilities, ranging from ADHD to speech/language impairments to learning disabilities. Their reading levels also vary, but many of them are reading at least two levels below grade level. They are aware that they are behind their peers and they want to catch up. My students are bright kids who work hard everyday to overcome their challenges. In order to do so, they require intensive instruction, sometimes on a daily basis. Reading is something that does not come easily for them, but they put in the effort necessary for them to make progress toward becoming better readers.
My Project
The Fountas and Pinnell Leveled Literacy Intervention System is a program that is designed to help teachers like me provide effective, small-group instruction for struggling readers. It is a program proven to bring children up to grade level competency in a short amount of time. Through the use of carefully chosen leveled books, the program provides lessons to help students take meaningful steps toward meeting their grade-level goals.
As the students progress through each lesson, they develop more and more of the skills necessary to make them fluent and competent readers. Other special education teachers in my school district have found this program to be a powerful tool in developing their students' reading skills. I would love to use it with my students to instill in them confidence and pride in their abilities to read.
Reading is a skill that we all need in order to be successful in the real world.
Those who start off behind their peers often fall further and further behind without proper intervention. I want my kids to dream big for themselves. They can become better readers and succeed in school and in life, but they need some help. I don't want my students' inability to read to be what holds them back from achieving what they want.
