To see or not to see, that is our safety statement in my classroom. I am a 6th grade science teacher who enjoys producing hands-on activities for my students. Our state has recently adopted Standardized Science Testing and our students performed poorly in the inquiry part. We are now emphasizing more labs including chemistry.
I do not have any safety glasses for the students. I am concerned about eye safety and would like to include labs that use chemicals but really require additional eye protection. It only takes 1 accident for a student to lose their sight forever. I currently do more demonstrations so I don't put them at risk but I can see their desire to be able to be a chemist and handle the materials. Often they ask if they can wear my safety glasses but I say that is not fair to the other students.
I envision my room filled with 25 scientists wearing colorful safety glasses looking very cool and completely absorbed in learning (shh! don't tell them). I can also feel assured that with the proper equipment all will be safe.
You can make a difference in their lives. Your help will fulfill a dream of more labs done and ensure their safety. You will help inspire future scientists and engineers who will build our future.
