I teach different levels of science including Biology, Anatomy & Physiology and AP Environmental Science. The students are from a variety of backgrounds including many that are self supporting minors. We are a high needs, high poverty school in one of the largest public school districts in our state.
We are also an old school in an old area of town and little has been invested in the building or supplies in a generation. We have students coming to this school and using the same lab equipment their parents used 20 years ago. In spite of the hardships my students are eager to learn and are willing to improvise. They always make the best of whatever we have to use.
Labs, we love labs! Science is about experimentation and sometimes experiments can be messy. In order to keep our students safe we need safety goggles that work and will stay on. Our current class room set of goggles are worn out and scratched. The elastic straps are either broken or stretched out and do not fit properly.
My students are enthusiastic and want to succeed. They have shown that they are willing to continue and persevere in the face of obstacles. Having these new goggles will help them overcome the challenges of their situation and allow them the freedom to explore science through a safe lab experience.
