I had an amazing lab planned. 2 other science teachers had the same idea, but with 40 safety goggles. My lab had stations, so I decided to take goggles only for the stations that posed a greater risk. I had to use the eyewash station for the first time in 7 yrs. Please don't let it happen again.
I have great students!!
However, classes are packed to the walls with anywhere from 32-40 students per class, all day long. I teach 8th grade science which can be a blast with the curious minds of that age. Those curious minds are not always the most cautious minds. They need to start with a safe environment, I can't do that with the limited supplies currently available.
I didn't think it was possible for them to find a way to create a hazard at the station with glow sticks & water. I was very wrong. Luckily we were able to get to the eyewash station soon enough we were able to avoid disaster. This was a great learning experience for both my students and myself.
My Project
I want my students to have the best experience possible while they are here. Inquiry learning is an exciting and enjoyable way for these students to discover science for themselves!! At this age lectures are boring, reading textbooks is boring, watching videos, except Mythbusters, is boring. This generation of students are used to being entertained by all the latest technology. In order to meet this need, teachers have to be more creative and provide things to see and do in the classroom, thereby, heightening 8th graders interest levels in science and thus their ability to learn. Lab experiences are perfect for helping accomplish all of these needs, but are limited if we have limited safety supplies. Enough safety goggles for each student & goggle cleaning supplies will allow for many learning experiences throughout the year.
Please help me provide a safe environment for my students, so I can provide them with effective and interesting learning experiences.
I make a big deal about responsibility, and I have realized that I am not being the best example myself when it comes to safety standards in my classroom. The more students can personally experience, the more they can learn skills that will help them throughout life.
