Safety, Clarity and Peace for My Students

My Students

Ī teach 7th grade students who will be entering our school this fall amid rising Covid 19 cases. Our students are a mix of general and special education learners and will be taught in a co-teaching environment, with two teachers. Our students have both heart and a sense of humor.

I imagine some will be elated to be reunited with friends and teachers while others will be afraid and timid to start face to face learning.

The kids generally come in thinking that they aren't going to like English, that they don't like to read and write. However, with the right mix of local literature, brain puzzles and community building, they leave our classroom as co-inquirers with the ability to think deeply, speak articulately and listen with their hearts.

My Project

I am asking for a printer to minimize exposure in the teacher workroom, headset and microphone so the kids can hear me both in the classroom and when we transition to Zoom conferences, and I want to provide the students' with a Tibetan bowl that I will ring to start class both in person and in their home settings.

I am trying to wrap my head around creating a safe, clean, warm, friendly, clear and thoughtful environment both for my students to enter in person in two-weeks time AND how to set up for the transition to distance learning which, I believe, will be inevitable given our Corona cases.

These three items will provide safety for me, clarity for the students and a sense of community that I am hoping will span our in person and our virtual learning time.
