My students are a vivacious bunch of inner-city teens from all different walks of life. Students at our school come from all over the city as our program is a magnet; the common bond is that students are all here to study a second language and engage in studies with an international focus or lens. Our rigorous International Baccalaureate program encourages students in their junior and senior years of high school to specialize and dedicate their time and energy to one art area- I teach Visual Arts. Students who sit for IB exams (which are similar in nature to AP exams) and score high enough are able to bypass first-year university courses. We have high expectations for our students, but we don't meet their most basic needs due to budgetary limitations.
While our students are challenged by the course work, our budget is never big enough to adequately accommodate every student.
My current biggest need is new seats/stools for my art classroom. I have asked for 3 years and every year the money allocated for furniture and consumable supplies always runs short long before this expensive purchase can be made.
Every day I make magic happen with more than 100 students on a shoestring budget. I dumpster dive, ask for donations, recycle materials and do whatever it takes to make my $1000 yearly budget work for all of my art students. Purchasing new furniture is not even a possibility with the entirety of my yearly budget.
Please help me provide a comfortable workspace for students to look forward to using each day.
Students should feel respected and welcomed by our school environments. I see my IB art students every day for the whole year... the seat they occupy and work in every single day should feel safe and comfortable.
