Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
Special needs students from a low-income neighborhood in the South Bronx, New York receive therapy services in the local public school. We serve students in Pre-K through 5th grade.
My students have impairments with balance, motor coordination, muscle weakness, and delays in visual perceptual skills to name a few.
Our students with various diagnoses including autism, ADHD, sensory processing disorder, and apraxia, require occupational, physical, and speech therapy services to help them access the school environment and curriculum to their fullest potential.
My Project
Currently, my students are being treated on hard laminate flooring. We have an area rug and yoga mat to help provide a softer surface. This limits the type of activities the children can participate in.
It is critical that we get a properly padded area in the therapy room for optimal safety.
My students need a Super-Safe Tumbling Ramp, and a Super-Safe Tumbling Matfoam to engage in safe therapy sessions. With an expandable foam mat, the children can work on movement skills such as rolling, jumping, balancing, coordination and transfers. Motor skill activities include yoga, stretching, movement go-fish, Simon Says, obstacle courses, etc. The mat can prevent injury and provide a clean cushioned surface for such activities. The goal is to eventually get more equipment and mats, but at this time, one mat would be a great starting point!
