Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

My students are a diverse and socio-economically disadvantaged group of 9th through 12th graders in a high needs district. The students are participants in the after school theatre program and/or students in our theatre elective courses, Introduction to Theatre and Acting and Performance.

My students give tirelessly of themselves for countless hours in and after school to create student-led theatrical productions.

The students handle almost all aspects of the theatre program, including serving as designers, stage managers, carpenters, and technicians. They are fully committed to making the most of their limited resources so that the productions are as high quality as possible.

Most of my students have very limited exposure to any type of theatre before they come to me. Because of this, it is important to me that I am able to give them as broad an understanding of theatre as possible.

My Project

My students have shown a passionate interest in the world of stage combat and I would like to help them learn more about it in a safe and controlled environment. Stage Combat as an art in theatre dates back centuries and can be found in some of the most famous plays ever written. My students want to be able to learn more about this art and these materials will help them do that.

These books and equipment will allow my students to learn and practice stage combat in a safe and practical manner.

They will then be able to take what they have learned and use it on stage, starting with a production of The Three Musketeers. This type of learning is hugely engaging to students and allows them to physically engage in the process of theatre making and is great at attracting new students to the program.

Beginning their exploration of stage combat here can open up a much larger world to the students. They can take what they have learned here and apply it to other productions, college, university, or conservatory programs, and eventually into the professional world.
