This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Project

I am unexpectedly a Newcomer Counselor this year and am excited to work with students again. I have watched students struggle with hunger and stress. I want them to feel welcome and safe and have a place they belong. Many have experienced trauma and unimaginable circumstances and need a place to relax and feel seen, even if just for a few minutes a day.

Our students are refugees, asylum seekers, immigrants and unaccompanied minors.

I would like to set up some items like snacks and fidgets for students to take when they visit my office so they feel welcome. The storage containers are to keep mice out of the snacks. The storage bins are where I will display the snacks so students can take them. And the Mental Health posters are to make it a welcoming place- they are in Spanish, which is what most of my students speak.
