Safe Space for Big Emotions

Help me give my students the materials and tools they need to feel safe in an environment created to help them self-regulate their emotions.

My Project

Welcome to my special education classroom where I have students who need special services in reading, math, written language, behavior (social emotional and adaptive), communication, and fine motor skills. With me being new to special education, there is a lot of materials and tools that I do not have yet.

My students deserve to have a variety of tools to help them access their ability to self regulate when they are having big emotions.

This means creating areas in the classroom where they can go to reset. My calming area is a big corner where I will place bean bag chairs, pillows, and weighted blankets. The students will also have access to bins of tools to help the self regulate. These tools consist of pop-it fidgets, felt board, neat writing tablets, etc.

I also teach social-emotional health in the mornings. The students come in and we work on different ways to regulate our emotions. The 180 days of Social Emotional is a great start to the day. The calming stickers will be placed on the tables and desks. I also added a bunch of neat books that we will be able to read and talk about. It is all about meeting the students where they are at.
