I am an elementary Life Skills teacher in a high poverty school. All of my students receive free breakfast and lunch. We currently have three Life Skills classes in our building. There are over 40 students with a wide range of physical and developmental disabilities including Down Syndrome, Cerebral Palsy, sensory or visual impairment, and Autism. Our students require all academics to be modified, and they access the curriculum through a variety of methods.
We have a big goal this year .
. . to create a multi-sensory learning center for ALL the classes to use. This therapeutic room will allow children who are non-ambulatory to get out of their wheelchairs and explore materials safely. Students with limited vision will be able to access the light stimulation they require. Cause and effect activities will also be readily available for students working on those skills. Students with behavioral challenges can also use this room as a calming environment or for reinforcement.
My Project
The chairs that I am requesting for my classroom will allow students who are in great need of proprioceptive input the opportunity to sit with peers during whole group activities (i.e., calendar time and storytime) in a chair that is designed with both comfort and versatility in mind.
Medically fragile children will be safe and supported in the just-right-sized cube chairs!
Each child has a unique set of sensory needs and should have a carefully designed sensory diet and personalized activity plan that will provide the sensory input necessary to stay focused and engaged throughout the day.
The sense of safety and security that these seating options will provide will allow vulnerable children a chance to sit with classmates while learning.
