My Students

Pop! Fizz! Bang! Whiz! What is the best thing you remember from science? For my students, they love getting into the laboratory and conducting experiments. They are excited to do observational studies, but they crave the ability create a chemical reaction themselves and conduct an experiment.

My students are Ambassadors.

They are given responsibility for components of their school and they have also designed and implemented service projects in their community. They take initiative and exercise their voice in a positive way, as middle school students. They are awesome! Our school is in the largest school district in the country and in one of the poorest parts of that district. Despite any of that, my Ambassadors are champions of their school, their community, and themselves.

My Project

Most of my students have never conducted a full experiment. Most of them have not worked with chemicals in the classroom. Do they want to? Of Course! They cannot wait. I like teaching through scientific inquiry and exploration. I believe it helps students to think like scientists. To look to their textbook as a reference, instead of their only connection to science. In my experience as a science instructor, hands-on, problem-based, inquiry-based science lessons have always been more successful. In all of this, I also like keeping my students safe. In order to explore in the laboratory, they need safety goggles and a way to keep chemicals off their uniforms. I have requested 40 pairs of goggles and 40 aprons because my class size is about 32. This equipment will let my students experience scientific investigation firsthand. It will help foster their curiosity and questions, one of the main sources of innovation in our world.

In a beginning of year survey to my students, I asked what they hoped to learn in science this year.

All but one of my 125 7th grade students answered "experiments". Donations of safety equipment will help immensely. Last year, lab kits recommended by my district were ordered by my principal. Those kits come with chemicals and supplies, but do not come with safety equipment. Help get my students into the laboratory and begin investigating!
